In summer 2024, the second edition of the REEF Ambassadors program brought together 16 youths from Akkar, including newcomers and returning participants from the 2023 pilot edition, for a transformative 4-day training. The program engaged 12-17-year-olds in a series of dynamic and educational activities designed to deepen their understanding of biodiversity and environmental stewardship.
Sessions on biodiversity, biomimicry, and environmental responsibility encouraged critical thinking and sparked curiosity.
Activities included biodiversity-themed exhibitions and hikes, a terrarium workshop, and visits to butterfly and fossil museums, enhancing the participants’ understanding of ecosystems.
Participants received training in evaluating audiovisual works and applied these skills during film screenings. A deliberation meeting followed, where they nominated their favorite film for the short film competition award.
The participants displayed exceptional maturity and organization throughout the program, excelling in discussions, crafting a press communique, and delivering impactful speeches during the closing ceremony.
Youths from the 2023 program were trained by professional mountain guides and biodiversity experts before the REEF Ecnounters 2024. During the event, they led a group of 100 participants through the Helesban Valley, showcasing Akkar’s rich biodiversity and their newfound leadership skills.Through the trail, participants experienced the thrill of discovery and the joy of exploring nature through the eyes of the kids.
