The Biodiversity & Cinema Project
In 2023, the Biodiversity and Cinema project served as an accomplished example of REEF’s dedication to supporting environmental storytelling and narratives. Gathered at the Hammana Artist House, 22 ecologists and filmmakers were able to forge links and deepen their knowledge of biodiversity thanks to the presence of experts and field visits. This residency acted as an incubator where ideas were nurtured into impactful stories. Together the filmmakers and environmentalists worked in a collaborative way on eight short documentaries. Shot across various Lebanese regions, the films address diverse themes related to biodiversity, such as the impact of pesticides and permaculture in Bekaa, the effects of privatization on public natural sites like a northern Lebanon, risks from invasive plant species, the connection between traditional feminine practices and land conservation, ornithological observations versus hunting practices, the importance of endemic species such as the juniper tree and Matthiola flower, and challenges surrounding water resources. The screenings of the films are designed to raise awareness and spark dialogue within communities.
